A brief history and understanding of Portrait Photography

Paul's Studio Portrait Photography

The art of portraits dates back as far as cavemen. The idea being to capture a moment in time; producing a record. As technological developments were made we have progressed through paintings to the photographs we take today. Since the development of the camera in the 19th Century, the art of portrait photography has developed rapidly.

As with the development of art, through time the style and trends of portrait photography has changed dramatically. Early portraits featured mainly plain backgrounds, formal posing and simple lighting. Over the years as technology has moved on, the photographic industry has opened up to a whole new world and allowed photographers to expand on technicality and creativity of portrait photography. This could include experimentation of perspective, composition, lighting and introducing props. And of course photographic equipment and techniques have been developed which has allowed photographers to capture images with shorter exposure times and be alot more creative.

Lighting is very important in portrait photography. There are so many effects you can create with one light alone, so to introduce two more; the possibilities are endless. However there are common lighting plans which most photographers tend to use; unless you are purposely breaking the rules to be creative.

To bring out the natural expression and personality in a person is a whole other art in itself. As a studio we like to build a rapport with our clients first, this way we can get to know you and find out exactly what you would like from your shoot. It’s important to us that you feel relaxed and confident, this way we are able to bring out the best in you!
